The New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints was founded by local sports entrepreneur Dave Dixon fifty-three years ago. The name Saints derives from November 1st being All Saints day. The day the New Orleans Saints played their first game in 1966.
The Saints host their home games at the Superdome. In 2005, greater New Orleans was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. During the disaster period, The Superdome served as an emergency shelter for the displaced residents. This earned the team the nickname of ‘the Bless You Boys’. The Superdome was also heavily damaged by the hurricane. The team was unable to host any games in 2005. The stadium was renovated the following year at an estimated cost of 186 million US dollars and renamed the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
After the AFL-NFL merger in 1966, the city of New Orleans was allowed its NFL franchise. Since New Orleans was famous for its thriving jazz music circuit, the Franchise was named The New Orleans Saints after the song “When the Saints go Marching In”.
The Saints were barely considered a threat in the league for most of their early days. Similar to their rival, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, The Saints did not qualify for the playoffs in its 20 years of establishment. Fortunes started to turn in their favor from 1987. The Saints qualified for the playoffs with their first-ever winning season.
New Orleans franchise faced difficulties from 1990-2005. In fifteen years, The Saints made it to the playoffs only five times. Every time being knocked out within the first few games. With the hurricane Katrina devastating the gulf coast, the Saints struggle would continue. Since the Superdome was damage, the Saint’s home games were arranged in another team’s stadium. Tiger Stadium was one of the famous venues that hosted the Saints in 2005.
Sean Payton was hired by the New Orleans Saints in 2006. He is still the head coach of the Saints. As luck would have it, Payton was just what the saints needed. With Payton’s supervision, Saint’s appearance in the Super Bowl Playoffs started to become more frequent. The same year, former San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees signed a six-year contract with the franchise.
The New Orleans Saints spent the next five years without any viable success. After much shuffling, New Orleans finally found their winning combination in 2009. Since the AFL–NFL merger, Saints posted their longest undefeated streak at 13-0. Ultimately leading to the divisional trophy.
On February 7, 2010, at Super Bowl XLIV it was Payton Vs. Payton. Shaun Payton’s New Orleans Saints defeated Payton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts by 31-17. Quarterback Drew Brees was named the player of the year by NFL and won the super bowl MVP.
After much-needed success, New Orleans Saints found themselves on the front page once again in 2012. This time for all the wrong reasons. Former defensive assistant Mike Cerullo was let go in 2009 due to poor performance. An angry Cerullo contacted the NFL regarding a bounty program and the Saints.
Bounties are non-contract bonuses offered to players for injuring the opposition. Although this practice is banned by the NFL, an underground culture allegedly exists. Cerullo testified that he kept track of payments made under the supervision of head coach Sean Payton and defensive coach Gregg Williams. Sean Payton and 27 other players received a yearlong ban from the NFL and AFL. After a few months, bans on the players were lifted but Payton was still banned. He would resume his duties from 2013.
The Franchise has strong divisional rivalries against the Atlanta Falcons, The Carolina Panthers and of course their upcoming opponent The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
For the last three seasons, Saints are shaping up to be a formidable franchise. Quarterback Drew Brees and wide receiver Emmanuel Butler appear to be in their prime. Brees’ replacement Taysom Hill only recently started to display his skills on the field.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a pro-football team from Tampa Florida. Prior to the NFL realignment of the NFL, the Buccaneers played in the NFC Central division. They are currently in the NFC South Division. The franchise’s last playoff appearance was back in 2007. This season, The Buccaneers are looking to improve on their record. Owned by the Glazer family, Tampa Bay Buccaneers host their home games at the Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers played their first game as an expansion team in 1976. After two seasons with the NFL, the Buccaneers posted a losing record of 0-26. Till this day, Tampa Bay’s losing streak remains the most notorious in the NFL. The Buccaneers were the laughing stock of teams and audiences alike.
The first head coach of the Buccaneers was John Mckay. Despite having the worst losing streak in the history of the NFL, Mckay refused to give up on the team. His confidence in his players would soon prove to fruitful. The Buccaneers defeated the New Orleans Saints and the St. Louis Cardinals back to back to end the streak. Both franchises became furious with the loss to Tampa Bay and fired their coaches in mid-season.
Since their first appears, the franchise struggled with finding success on the field. Until the arrival of coach Tony Dungy. Dungy laid the foundation of the Buccaneer’s success today. Dungy’s original defensive scheme known as Tampa 2 is still being employed by the team. Players like Shaun King and Bert Emanuel helped turn the tides for the Buccaneers.
Tony Dungy was let go in 2001. And the Buccaneers launched another search for their head coach. General Manager Ricky McKay, considered Steve Spurrier a former quarterback for the Buccaneers, Marvin Lewis the defensive coach for the Ravens franchise as a replacement for Dungy. But owners of the franchise, The Glazer brothers made it evident that they wanted a Super Bowl to win. So, they discarded the candidates and took on the search themselves.
The Glazers brothers wanted to hire Jon Gruden who was still under contract with the Oakland Raiders. The Buccaneers drafted Gruden at a king’s ransom. They lost their right to first and second-round draft to the Raiders. After this, The NFL banned the drafting of coaches as would bring terrible balance to the drafting session.
Gruden was very pleased with his new team and management. He made it his first priority to get the Buccaneer’s offensive line in shape.
The Buccaneers had their most successful season in 2002 with Jon Gruden. He helped players like Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber to reach their full potential. Tampa Bay posted their best record in the playoff and proceeded to the super bowl.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the Super Bowl against Gruden’s former team The Oakland Raiders. Derrick Brooks had a tendency to go for big plays. together with Barber’s speed and agility, Buccaneers won the Super Bowl in a picture-perfect finish. Despite having the best offense in the league, The Raiders were upset by a score of 48-21. This marked Buccaneers only appease in the super bowl.
The following season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers returned to their old ways. They lost the postseason for two consecutive years. But managed to return to the playoffs in 2005 and 2007. Both times the franchise was knocked out of the season.
In 2008, management fired Gruden and a massive portion of the locker room in order to rebuild the franchise from the ground up. It would take the team two more years to find their footing. With the surprising hire of college-level coach Greg Schiano, Buccaneers posted 10 games wins in 2010. But missed the playoffs. Needless to say, the rebuilding effort did yield any viable results for the franchise. Over the years the team was featured in a number of embarrassing moments in the game. Most embarrassing is perhaps the MRSA bacterial outbreak in the locker room.
